When a loved one is ready for hospice care, there are many choices they may have to make. One of which is: where will they spend their final months, weeks, and days of their life? They could live in a nursing home, assisted living facility, hospital, specialized hospice care center (like Hospice of the Fisher Home), their home, or a family member's home.

The choice that is made depends on the wishes of the person entering hospice care and the resources available. In many cases, spending this time in their own home or a loved ones’ can feel the most comfortable. If you are taking on the responsibility of bringing a hospice patient into your home, there are things that have to be done. Preparing your home for hospice care involves thoughtful adjustments to create a safe, supportive, and peaceful environment.

With the help of your local hospice, you can make sure that your friend or family member is at ease. We’ve put together some tips for prepping your home for hospice care, but if you have any questions feel free to comment below or reach out on our FAQ page!

1. Designate a Comfortable Space

Choose a quiet, accessible room where your loved one can receive care with ease. Ideally, this space should accommodate necessary medical equipment, provide natural light, and offer a soothing atmosphere. Consider placing personal items such as family photos, favorite items, and other extras to maintain familiarity and comfort.

2. Ensure Safety and Accessibility

Hospice patients may experience mobility challenges. As their illness progresses, they may have physical and functional impairments that affect their ability to move. That being said, it’s crucial to remove potential hazards in the home:

  • Clear walkways of rugs, cords, and clutter to prevent falls.

  • Install grab bars in bathrooms and near the bed if needed.

  • Use a hospital bed, wheelchair, or walker as recommended by the hospice team.

3. Manage Medical Equipment and Supplies

Your hospice can provide:

  • Hospital beds

  • Overbed table

  • Oxygen tanks

  • Bedside commodes

  • Medications and pain management tools

These items will vary depending on your loved ones wants and needs.

4. Create a Peaceful Atmosphere

Emotional well-being is just as important as physical comfort when it comes to hospice care. Enhance the space with soft lighting, soothing music, and aromatherapy if your loved one enjoys it. Encourage family visits while also respecting their need for rest.

5. Coordinate with Hospice Staff

Hospice professionals are there to provide medical care, emotional support, and guidance. They are knowledgeable in what you are going through! Ensure they have:

  • A designated space for their supplies.

  • A list of emergency contacts.

  • An established schedule for visits and care routines.

This will help support your loved one and keep their care team on the same page.

6. Support Caregivers and Family Members

Caring for a loved one in hospice can be emotionally and physically demanding. Make arrangements for respite care, meal deliveries, or support groups to assist family caregivers. Or, if you are the family caregiver, reach out to your community for help.

Preparing your home for hospice care helps create a nurturing environment where your loved one can experience comfort and dignity in their final stage of life. By making thoughtful modifications and seeking support, you ensure that their needs are met with both compassion and ease.
